"People moving all the time inside a perfectly straight line, don't you wanna just curve away"

We live in a society where were expected to follow the norm. Whether it's how we dress, how we act, or how we conduct ourselves, it feels like we live in a copy cat society.  Shouldn't being different be celebrated not chastised.  The song "Strawberry Swing" by Coldplay suggests that we should be true to ourselves and that we need to make our own individual choices.  Not afraid to take risks, or stray from the path, be comfortable with who we are and that will make your life more interesting and exciting.

Blog Post - Option #1

Learning Goal:

Your task is to create your own bucket list (5 things) and post it on your blog. Please describe why you chose each item and insert an image.

Mr. Kaufman's bucket list

1. Visit Fiji- My wife and I have always wanted to travel to the beautiful country of Fiji. This will be difficult to accomplish as it is located on the other side of the world. As well, if I go on my summer vacation, the seasons are flipped making it their winter. If I travel across the globe, it better be ninety degrees. I have a confession, technically I have been to Fiji. For a whopping 30 minutes, I was sitting on the runway at Nadi International airport while our plane refueled on route to Brisbane, Australia. Family vacations are on the backburner until my daughter is a little older.

2. Play golf at St. Andrews- St. Andrews is often regarded as one of the oldest and most well-known courses worldwide. Many people refer to it as the "Home of Golf". I enjoy watching and playing golf. It is my dream to play at the "Old course" and walk across the Swilcan bridge which is located on the 18th hole fairway just like Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson and many other legends. Can you believe that on the seventeenth tee, you actually drive the ball over the edge of a hotel? Sounds dangerous!

3. Complete a Marathon- 42.195 Kilometers or 26 miles and 385 yards! To give you some perspective, the distance from our school to the Air Canada Center is about 50 Kilometers. I think it would be an amazing accomplishment to be able to run a Marathon. I'm not sure if the appeal of running a Marathon is it's one of the original Olympic events or that every year I'm curious to hear the winning time in the Boston Marathon. After I finish a 10 km run, all I think to myself is I have to run four times this distance to accomplish my goal. Small strides, but I know deep in my heart I can do it if I set my mind to it.

4. Write a weekly sports column- A typical Sunday morning would involve me drinking my coffee and scrolling through numerous newspaper articles and blog posts. The topic always the same: SPORTS. I think it would be fascinating to have people excited to read my weekly sports column. I think I would call it "Brian's Take"..... I've already decided that I would write on a variety of sports including my favorites golf, soccer and hockey. Maybe one day instead of rambling my thoughts to anyone who will listen I will actually write them down.

5. Watch the Manchester Derby at Old Trafford- The Manchester Derby is one of the most exciting sporting events of the year. My wife says I say this countless number of times throughout the year but I would love to take this game in live at Old Trafford. Basically, if you live in Manchester, half of the city likes Manchester City (Blue) and the other half of Manchester likes Manchester United (Red)... When these teams meet, it's team vs team, supporters vs supporters, which leads to great entertainment. I guess the closest rivalry to the Manchester Derby in North American sports would be the Montreal Canadians versus Toronto Maple Leafs or the Boston Red Sox vs New York Yankees.

6.  180, 180, 180, the announcer yells in his high-spirited British accent, the crowd goes wild, and the spectators hold up their '180' signs. Yes, I'm one of those people that watch professional darts on television.  The precision of their throws, simply amazes me.  I have been excruciatingly close to achieving this feat.  It takes three perfect throws, one after another into the small red zone in the top third of the board.  A score of '180' is the highest score you can achieve in the game of darts.  I'm confident that one day soon, I will be able to say I'm accomplished this goal of mine.

Other ideas I have:

  • Learn to braid my daughter's hair
  • SOLVE a Rubrik's cube without the use Youtube
  • Whistle with my fingers loudly (PE teacher)

15 Things I Wish I Could Do, But Can't...YET!

  1. Make a hula hoop work:
Using a hula hoop is not a terribly important skill. No one wins an Olympic medal for it. Is rhythmic gymnastics still in the Olympics? The hula hoop always seemed like a very simple skill, at least it looks simple when a seven year old girl grabs a hula hoop and starts it spinning! Apparently, my hips don't work, because when I grab the hula hoop it falls to the ground as quickly as gravity will take it. As Bob Dylan sings, "It sinks like a stone..."

    2.   Proper cartwheel

A cartwheel falls into the same category as the hula hoop. Physical skills that appear simple to me, but when attempted are actually superhero-like tasks. My window of opportunity for this one may be closing, as I get older and slower. Every once in a while, when no one is looking, I give it a shot.

  3.  Play the guitar

I love music! I especially love great guitar players, like Neil Young or Eric Clapton (look them up). When I was a teenager working at summer camps, it was always the guys with guitars, playing "Wild World" by Cat Stevens, who attracted the crowds, especially the girls. My advice to you: if your parents offer you music lessons, go for it!
  1. Hit a 300 yard drive down the middle of the fairway
  2. Draw
  3. Stop properly on skate
  4. Dance without being self conscious
  5. Really speak a second language
  6. Drive a manual transmission car
  7. Really like gardening
  8. Slam dunk like Michael Jordan
  9. Solve the Rubik's cube

    Marshmallow Challenge

    Welcome Back Letter

    Welcome back!

Today is the first day of over one hundred eighty days we are going to spend together.  My greatest hope is this will be a time of great learning and fun together. I recently saw the quote, "I care more about the people my students become than the scores they get on tests." The more time I spend teaching, the more this holds true for me.

This will be my twenty-secondth year of teaching. Man, am I getting old? I think this will be my fourteenth year at Highview. I never thought I would stay at one school for this long, but Highview has been such a great community it is hard to imagine leaving. I am really excited to be teaching grade 7 and 8 this year. I have always thought that the intermediate students in a school set the tone for the whole school. In other words, the best schools usually have the best intermediates! One of my goals for you this year is to find opportunities to develop your leadership skills. I have no doubt that this is a class full of leaders.

Since I will be learning about you, I thought I would share a little bit about me. I was born in Sarnia, but my family moved to Toronto when I was only five. I am the third of four boys (my poor mother). Two passions ruled my childhood, sports and comics. The year I moved to Toronto was the first year the Blue Jays existed. I have been a die-hard fan ever since. I've celebrated the two World Series victories and suffered through some rough seasons. I played baseball in high school, even playing with a couple of eventual major league players. I credit comic books for my reading passion.

My biggest influence during my teenage years were my experiences at camp. By working at a summer camp, I discovered I wanted to be a teacher and I loved spending time in the great outdoors. Eventually, I even met my wife at camp. My wife and I still spend parts of our summer on canoe trips whenever possible.

Image result for icelandThis past summer was a busy one for me. My wife and I took a trip to England, Ireland and Iceland.

A large part of my leisure time this summer was spent playing golf. No matter how badly I play, I can't wait to get out again to see if I can get better. It certainly keeps me humble. During the school year, my sport of choice is volleyball. I play a couple of nights a week.

My big passion all year long is reading. Mr. Kaufman calls my book collection a library! Though my library is not growing very fast, because I'm reading more and more e-books. I read about 30 books this summer, including a number of books in preparation for teaching. I hope we will be able to share many great books together. What are your favourite books?

I hope over the next days and weeks I will have the opportunity to get to know all of you better. What is important to you? It looks like a great year ahead.

                                                                                                    Sincerely,

                                                                                                    T. Congram

    ONE word

Questions to think about as you look for your word:
    • what do I need?
    • what do I want?
    • what gets in my way?
    • what do I need to focus on?
    • what do I want to do this year that I haven't done before?
    • what do I want to do better this year?
